DAS visited Frenchman's Bay Public School on Thursday, June 11, 2009

DAS received an invitation to visit the 5 Grade One classes with our birds...

Our DAS members were pleased to visit the Frenchman's Bay Public School Grade One classes with our birds.  We try to indicate the commitment involved in purchasing a bird as a pet/companion, as well as letting them see how much love these feathered creatures are capable of giving back.  The students were allowed (with parental consent) to hold our birds on their arms or shoulders and have their photo taken.  One bird decided to take a balcony seat for our presentation.  Check out the photos...

DAS visited 19th Ajax Girl Guides on Thursday, May 28, 2009

DAS received an invitation to visit the Girl Guides with our birds...

Our DAS members were happy to accept an invitation from the 19th Ajax Girl Guides and took our birds to meet and entertain them.  We try to stress the commitment that has to be made when purchasing a bird companion, while showing them what wonderful pets these beautiful creatures make.  The girls were given the opportunity to hold our birds on their arms or shoulders and have their photo taken.  A couple of birds were allowed to fly free in the gymnasium with an unexpected result.  Check out the photos...

DAS visited 16th Ajax Beaver Scouts on Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Sharing the love for our birds with the next generation...

DAS members were invited to visit the 16th Ajax Beaver Scout colony on April 15th and speak to the group about various pet birds, their care and their needs.  We were happy to let our birds show them what wonderful pets they are.  It was obvious that the birds had a wonderful time, and the youngsters (and the leaders too!) were thrilled to meet our birds and learn about them.

These are some of the birds that brought their owners along for a visit...

DAS visited Balleycliffe Retirement Lodge on Monday, December 1, 2008

Cockatoos share the love...

DAS members were invited to visit the residents of Ballycliffe Retirement Lodge on December 1st to introduce the residents to their feathered companions.  With poor weather in some areas making travel very difficult and some members were unable to attend for health reasons, there were still a few who were able to take in their birds to meet and greet the residents, who assembled in the Activity area.  There were lots of questions and the birds thrilled the group as they displayed their 'talents'.  These wonderful birds won over the hearts of their audience and and made lots of new friends.

Pete + Victoria      Caesar     Cuddles      Kaeli

The 'too Crew was made up Debbie's two Mollucan 'toos - Pete and Victoria, Terry's two Mollucan 'toos - Caesar and Cuddles, and Diane's smaller single Goffin's 'too - Kaeli.

Kaeli started before the others arrived by showing off her clipped wings, flipping over and zooming downwards, and bobbing up and down in a typical 'too dance.

When the rest came in, Caesar did her Saint Nick imitation by wearing her red Santa Claus suit.  Following this, she donned her frilly wedding gown to accept a large 'diamond' ring from her suitor Cuddles, who was wearing his best tux for the occasion.  The engagement was sealed with a beaky kiss.

Then Pete hopped up and down the line of ardent admirers just begging for them to agree how beautiful he was.  Debbie scooped him up and showed them what happened to naughty birds as she held him on one hand and 'shot' him with her 'fingers' gun.  As Debbie said, "Bang!", Pete promptly fell forward and hung upside-down from her hand.  This was such fun that it was repeated two or three times to the enjoyment of the audience.

Questions were asked and answered as Cuddles did what he is best at... being passed from one pair of willing hands to the next pair of waiting hands.  Cuddles loves nothing more than being held, petted, scratched, cuddled and loved... much to the thrill of both Cuddles and the Lodge residents.

DAS supports the local Food Drive and Toy Drive each year

For many years, DAS members have brought in unwrapped toys to our Christmas Social meeting in December.  These toys are dropped off at a local Fire Hall for their Toy Drive.  Previously at this meeting, our members also brought in non-perishable food items to be taken to the Fire Hall for their Food Drive, but more recently the Food Drive has been moved to the Easter meeting instead.  DAS has been pleased to support both the Toy Drive and the Food Drive.

DAS supports F.L.A.P. in October 2008

(Fatal Light Awareness Program)

At the DAS October, 2008 meeting, DAS members voted unanimously to make a monetary donation to F.L.A.P. after Mike M spoke about his volunteer assistance in tracking the number of migratory birds that fly into buildings that have their lights blazing at night.  Dead birds are collected and listed, and birds that survive are cared for and then released back into the wild.  F.L.A.P. is attempting to make businesses aware of this problem, and encourages them to turn off the lights at night when the buildings are empty, thereby saving countless birds from injury and death.

To read more about this program, check at: F.L.A.P.

DAS Proudly Supports the Canadian National Show

~ ~ ~ ~   We did it again!   ~ ~ ~ ~

In 2006, when the Canadian National Caged Bird Show was held in the east, Durham Avicultural Society was pleased to present the host club in Ottawa with a cheque in the amount of $500.00 to help with the expenses of their show.

This year (2008), the Canadian National Caged Bird Show is being hosted by the Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society (BFBS) in Richmond Hill.  At our May meeting our speaker was Dahlijah Rahm, President of BFBS, and Durham Avicultural Society was proud to present her with a cheque for $500.00 to assist with expenses for their show.

We also hope that everyone will support the National Show by volunteering their help in whatever way they would like, and by attending the biggest show of the year... the Canadian National Caged Bird Show
