When you become a member of the Durham Avicultural Society, you are welcome to attend our monthly meetings.
Come out to hear some great speakers, and perhaps see some of our members' pet birds up close and personal! We generally have a number of birds at our meetings... and you'll definitely want to meet Caesar, a Mollucan Cockatoo, who enjoys dressing up in a variety of costumes to suit the occasion.
Your membership also includes a copy of our Monthly Newsletter, the DAS Bulletin. Each newsletter is full of informative and interesting articles our feathered friends. All of our members are encouraged to submit stories and reports to the Bulletin. Our Bulletin Editor, Nancy, would be pleased to accept submissions of articles, or offers to write a monthly column. She will also accept ads to run in our Bulletin. For cost of ads, please check in your Bulletin, or contact Nancy.
As a DAS member, you can attend our annual Christmas Social Pot Luck Dinner, and enjoy the fellowship and company of other bird enthusiasts. You can chat with breeders and pick up hints and tips, or speak to pet lovers and exchange stories.
There is also a Library with lots of great books available to borrow at each meeting. Our Library has books on a large variety of bird species, as well as helpful books on bird behaviour and how to care for your bird. Some bird magazines can be borrowed from our Library as well. We even have some videos that can be loaned out to our members. There is deposit required for books and videos that will be refunded when the book or video is returned. These items are loaned out for a one month period, and should be brought back to the next meeting. To check out the books, magazines or videos, see Ron, our Librarian.
Joan is our Social Convener, and looks after our Snack Bar which has a selection of goodies, as well as coffee, tea and other beverages. These are free of charge, but donations to help cover the costs of our monthly meeting hall are welcome.
Members can purchase leg bands at our meetings from our Membership and Ring Director, Marg. Bands for next year can be ordered beginning in September of the current year, and will be available in November of this year. This service is only available to current members who have paid their membership dues for the year which is inscribed on the bands.
