Durham Avicultural Society of Ontario

Our History

Perhaps members could provide more and interesting tidbits about our club?

If you have any additional information or interesting facts, please email us and let us know so that we can add them to this page.

On November 8, 1977 fourteen people met at the home of Ken and Marg Powell.  Present at that meeting were Ken and Marg Powell, Guido Dellaguise, John MacKay, A. Rinoldi, Gionanni (John) Favit, John (Jock) Lamont, Robert Ednie, Frank Formosa, Henry Wyderman, Borge  Rasmussen, Morris DeNolde, Jim Anderson and Ted vanSchyndel.

This was the birth of the Durham Avicultural Society of Ontario.

We meet at The Rotary Park Pavilion in Ajax on the second Tuesday of each month, except July and August, when members have a summer break.

DAS hosts an Annual Bird Show each September, which will take place at the Oshawa Curling Club, starting in 2009.  The weekend event begins with set-up on Friday, has judging on Saturday, and a Pet Bird Show on Sunday.  Tickets are sold throughout the weekend for our giant raffle and our 50/50 draw… tickets to be drawn on Sunday afternoon.

One of our meetings is a fund-raising auction of items donated by DAS members… the funds going towards our show and regular club expenses.

Each meeting night includes a raffle, a 50/50 draw and a snack bar (donations very welcome).  These funds go to the rental of our hall each month, as well as our shows.

DAS tries to bring speakers on various species of birds to our meetings, and we usually have a Young Bird Show as well.

Members of DAS go to community events to educate the public on the care of pet birds, and to make them aware of our club.

At one of our meetings, unwrapped toys are brought by the members, to be donated to the local fire hall in order to help brighten the life of children in need in the Durham area.

The last meeting of the year is our Christmas Social, which includes a potluck dinner for everyone to enjoy.  The Social also has draw prizes, and is a great time to get to know the other members better, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The year 2007 was the thirtieth anniversary of DAS, and we are looking forward to the next 30 years of fellowship in aviculture.

Here are some DAS facts:

These bits and pieces of information came from old bulletins, minutes and memory.   Any one of these sources may not be 100 % accurate.

DAS hosted the National Cage Bird Show three times.  The first was in 1987, and again in 1991 and then in 2002.  John Zerafa was Show Manager for all three of these shows and for many others.
