May 12, 2009 DAS Meeting

Many thanks to Wayne Davey for coming to our meeting to speak to our members about some of the many places he has visited where they breed and/or keep rare parrots.  His slide presentation was a wonderful reminder of just how beautiful these birds are, and what a great loss it would be if there were not people whose purpose is to keep them from become another extinct species.  Thank you, Wayne!

Wayne Davey is the Curator of Bird Kingdom in Niagara Falls.  This is a chance for bird lovers to walk among the birds as they fly freely in an indoor tropical forest.  You can take photos of all the wonderful species.  There is even a roomful of Lorikeets where you can purchase a small cup of nectar and be amazed as the Lorikeets land on you to sample the sweet food that you are offering them.  Have your camera ready for this thrill of a lifetime!  There are also special programmes available to both youngsters and adults, as well as a well stocked gift shop for those of us who just can't resist anything 'birdy'.

For more information:  www.birdkingdom.ca

You can find them at 5651 River Road in Niagara Falls, Canada.

This is something you will remember for a lifetime!

Every bird is different, and should be accepted for what it is.  Even an untamed bird can be enjoyed for its beauty.  Those lucky enough to have a friendly, happy, well-socialized bird know what wonderful companions they can make.  And anyone with a talking bird understands the intelligence that goes along with all of that beauty.  If you think you would like one of these incredible creatures in your life, please consider that most of these birds will live for very many years, and require that you are prepared to put this kind of commitment into loving them and caring for them.  Think twice, and if this kind of promise on your part is not something you are prepared to make, then consider a pet that will demand less and will probably not outlive you.  Please don't make these birds throw-away pets!
